1970 Chevrolet Nova Restomod: Modern LS3 Performance
car character and modern performance engineering. Built by MB Hot Rods of Mobile, Alabama, the car was carefully constructed with an emphasis on craftsmanship, drivability, and refined detailing throughout.
The exterior bodywork and paint were executed by Metal Brothers, delivering a show-quality finish using PPG paint. The Nova wears an elegant two-tone combination of Ford Performance White on the roof and Ford Medium Blue Metallic on the body — a unique color pairing chosen by the owner that sets the car apart from traditional GM palettes while still complementing the Nova’s clean lines. According to the trim tag, the car originally left the factory in Classic White over Misty Turquoise, making this modern interpretation both distinctive and personal.
Every component of this build reflects careful thought, from the modern LS-based powertrain and Detroit Speed chassis upgrades to the high-quality interior materials and precisely restored trim.

Powertrain
Power comes from Chevrolet Performance’s highly regarded LS3 crate engine, part of the brand’s Connect & Cruise package designed to deliver modern reliability, drivability, and serious performance in classic builds. The LS architecture provides broad torque, crisp throttle response, and proven durability, making it a natural choice for a Pro-Touring Nova intended to be driven hard and enjoyed.
Backing the LS3 is a TREMEC T56 Super Magnum six-speed manual transmission, paired with an LS7 clutch assembly, giving the driver precise engagement and the ability to fully exploit the engine’s power across a wide range of driving conditions.
Induction air flows through a custom fabricated intake tube built by MB Hot Rods, while the engine is dressed with Holley LS valve covers finished to match the build’s clean presentation.
Exhaust gases exit through 1 7/8-inch Ultimate Headers, feeding a fully fabricated 3-inch stainless exhaust system built by MB Hot Rods and finished with Borla Pro XS mufflers, producing a deep, refined performance tone.
Cooling is handled by a C&R Racing dual-pass aluminum radiator equipped with integrated oil and power-steering coolers, paired with a matching C&R shroud and dual 12-inch Delta PAG fans with pulse-width modulation and integrated controller display. Additional oil cooling is provided via an Improved Racing adapter, while the entire plumbing system was custom-fabricated in-house by MB Hot Rods for a clean, purposeful engine bay.
Chassis & Suspension
Underneath, the Nova benefits from modern performance engineering courtesy of Detroit Speed & Engineering. Up front, the car features a complete hydroformed front subframe with Detroit Speed control arms, rack-and-pinion steering, and sway bar, dramatically improving steering precision, rigidity, and cornering performance compared to the original factory architecture.
Out back, a Detroit Speed Ford 9-inch rear housing anchors the drivetrain, equipped with Moser Engineering axles and third member. Power is delivered through a 3.50:1 gear set and TruTrac geared limited-slip differential, offering strong acceleration while maintaining street-friendly drivability.
Fuel delivery comes from a Rick’s Tanks stainless fuel tank with an integrated 255 LPH in-tank fuel pump, regulated by an Aeromotive fuel pressure regulator for consistent fuel supply to the LS powerplant.
Body & Fabrication
The body was refined with a number of thoughtful improvements to enhance both appearance and function. 1973–74 Nova doors were used to eliminate the original vent windows, creating a cleaner glass line and more modern profile.
Both front and rear bumpers were tightened and shaved to fit closer to the body, improving the Nova’s overall visual flow. The bumpers were then professionally re-chromed by Ogden Chrome, complementing the extensive exterior trim restoration.
Exterior brightwork combines carefully refurbished original pieces, NOS components, and high-quality reproduction trim sourced from respected restoration suppliers including GM Classics, Ground Up, and Classic Industries. Stainless pieces were professionally polished by Precision Metal Finishing, Inc.
Lighting has been modernized with Digitails LED parking and tail lights, improving visibility while preserving the car’s classic appearance.
Paint & Exterior Finish
The Nova’s finish was executed using PPG paint products, resulting in a rich, durable show-quality surface.
The two-tone combination features Ford Performance White on the roof contrasted by Ford Medium Blue Metallic across the body, an intentionally non-GM color pairing chosen to reflect the owner’s personal vision for the build. The result is a distinctive yet tasteful palette that highlights the Nova’s crisp body lines and muscular proportions.
All window glass is light green-tinted reproduction glass from Classic Industries, maintaining the period-correct appearance while ensuring fresh clarity throughout.
Interior & Driver Environment
The interior continues the theme of blending classic design with modern function.
Instrumentation will be handled by Dakota Digital HDX Series gauges designed specifically for the third-generation Nova platform. Climate control is provided by a Restomod Air Tru-Fit heating and air-conditioning system, ensuring modern comfort.
Electrical systems are managed by an American Autowire Builder Series harness, while Nu-Relics power window systems provide modern convenience for the side glass. Rear window regulators are refurbished factory components.
The cabin will feature Recaro Expert Series front seats upholstered in Houndstooth and leather, complemented by restored door panels rebuilt by Legendary Interiors to match the factory design. The original rear seat frames will be recovered to match the front seating for a cohesive appearance.
Interior trim pieces are a combination of refurbished originals and high-quality reproductions, maintaining the Nova’s authentic look.
Additional comfort upgrades include:
Restomod membrane insulation in the roof
Lizard Skin sound and thermal insulation on floors and trunk
Driver control comes through a rebuilt original Nova steering column upgraded with tilt, topped with a MOMO Resto steering wheel.
For audio, the car features a JVC head unit, Memphis amplifier, and a mix of Memphis and Kenwood speakers discreetly installed in factory locations for clean sound without compromising the interior design.
